On the Head of a Pin

Oh my fucking lord.
Before I get stuck into this... here's the link : clicky.
I got it though Sidereel, but it is a fast download and of good quality.
So, OH MY FUCKING LORD.
I have so many quotes and so much to say, which totally isn’t going to get said because I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it.
There’s a dead angel. Angels dying really cause a kafuffle because Castiel has to stop several car alarms going off and that… is one neat trick. She’s very pretty, and Castiel’s a bit upset over her death. There’s a yucky shot of a wound in her throat and an amazing overhead shot of imprinted wings and we switch to a dark road where Dean seems to be waking up right into a conversation. Good on you Sam, I’m pretty sure that’s trapping Dean. Sam talks about Ruby and when Dean says he doesn’t care Sam’s reaction suggests he wants Dean to care.
"Get angry". Oh Sam, Sam, Sam- I took this to mean that he is concerned about Dean, rather than not concerned about him. I feel that Sam wants his brother back, and with everything Dean's done in Hell and all the people close to him who have died, Sam is worried Dean will give up. Seasons one to three have shown that Dean does his best when he's angry, he has something to live for and the will to keep moving forward, so Dean's "I'm tired" is very disconcerting. (Personally, I reckon that Dean is on the edge of a total meltdown, and I will discuss this a bit later.)
I wonder how many times I'm going to say this (not just this episode, but all season) but oh Dean... he just doesn't get a break. Now in the “home, crappy home” of the motel Uriel addresses them like their some sort of business –“Winchester and Winchester” (and Sam gets his wish, Dean’s angry) and suddenly Dean’s being asked to torture Alistair and Uriel telling him that they're not asking and Castiel's standing in the back almost cruelly and they disappear and so Sam calls up Ruby. She rekons everything's fine and dandy and doesn't want to get back in with the angel business but she agrees to help find Dean (Ruby's little fire map trick was cool- go witch powers!) because Sam says Dean "can't do it". See, SEE Dean's collapsing, Sam can see and he's worried.
Back in the dungeons Dean is arguing and refusing to torture Alistair-“fascinating… where’s the door”, and Uriel laughs and says he's beginning to like Dean, and when Uriel goes, Castiel says very seriously "Uriel is the funniest angel in the Garrison, ask anyone". I'd like to mention that I was laughing so hard at this I nearly fell off my bed and had to pause the video because I couldn't hear or see anymore.
The fangirls went squee when he continues on with "I was getting to close to the humans and my charge, you" and nearly everyone went 'I knew it!' when he said "They feel I have begun to express emotions". Frankly, in that last scene, Uriel expressed more emotion that Castiel ever has, but Castiel strikes me as the 'keep it all inside' kind of guy and besides, it seems there is an explanation for Uriel.
I'm going to take a small timeout to say, the angel's death in the beginning- total awesomeness with the wings spread out, imprinted onto the road, I was very impressed.
Dean agrees with that (still, no matter how many times I watch the promo) heartbreaking line "You ask me to open that door, and walk through it, you will not like what walks back out" and then I practically burst into tears with Cas' reply "For what it's worth, I would give anything not to have you do this". Alistair singing was very likeable, really added to the characterisation Christopher has brought to him. “Heaven, I’m in heaven, and my heart beats so that I can hardly speak! I seem to find the happiness I seek when we’re out together, and dancing! Cheek to cheek!”. Love it. He also has a highly twisted sense of humour that I apparently share- "Grasshopper, you're gonna have to get creative to impress me". I liked Dean's authority in this scene, standing with his hands behind his back like some sort of Army general really gave a great comparison to how he ends up.
Back at the motel (either before or after, I didn't keep that much track of the episode) Sam has his answer through the fire map and tell Ruby it's been "weeks" and he "needs it". Coupled with Ruby's straddling we almost assume it's sexy time, but then pulls out a knife (blood-play kink much?) and Sam, like some vampire sucks the life out of her arm. She calls him Sammy, which totally agrees with my little theory I had- remember when Sam says in IKWYDLS(4.09) that Ruby said things Dean would have said... it's all a brainwashing trick. 'Sammy' is a comforting word to Sam, and Ruby is abusing that.
So Alistair reckons Dean isn't gonna have a good idea on how to start since he goes straight to Holy Water and damn, I was impressed when he filled the syringe. Alistair, for a very brief moment, was afraid. Very slightly, it's why he didn't say anything about the "creativity" of it. Castiel listens, or maybe doesn't listen but certainly hears because whenever we flip to the outer chamber we can hear the sounds of Alistair's screaming and it sends chills all over the place.
We find out several things during our time with Alistair, including that John resisted (well supposedly) for 100 years. Then he got free- flashback to AHBLp2. We also find out, (excluding those who are addicted to spoilers and have known this for a bit now) that Dean getting off the rack was the first seal. Kinda. It was the "first time you sliced into that weeping bitch... that was the first seal", as Dean broke, so did the seal (chorus with me now... oh, Dean...). I want to put him back together and hug him forever. He does NOT deserve any of this at all, I mean you want evidence?- he's the freaking "righteous man" from the scripture. RIGHTEOUS! Nevertheless, if the Apocalypse breaks out, "we'll owe it all to you Dean Winchester"
Alistair rams Castiel up against some sort of hook on a pillar which made a grotesque sound and begins to send Castiel back to Heaven (which I had to rewind and listen to again because I thought he said 'hell' the first time, gasp) and gasp the only way I wasn't having a heart attack about the glowing light was that I knew Castiel not only appears next season, but also in the next few episodes. in the lovely Misha suit.
Alistair suddenly chokes and is flipped back against a wall and it's SAM to the rescue, high and full on Ruby blood and totally "strong enough" to take on Alistair. Did I mention Dean loses consciousness? Cause he does, and so he doesn't see the extent of Sam's abilities, just like last week. Cause Sam... can totally kill Alistair and after we find out that it isn't Lillith (she'd kill "hundreds.. thousands") or really, any other demon, Sam wastes him. Again, despite the oh no!, oh Sam! aspect, Sam is gorgeous when he gets all evil and so 'Go team Sammy!' for the time being. I do want him to stop going darkside, but it is important for plot development. And did you see his eyes in the car? They were his hazel, and then suddenly the irises were black. Creepy much?
Castiel just watches and it's totally a 'thankyou' when he doesn't smite Sam on the spot or anything. But he totally gives Sam a look that makes Sam look slightly guilty. Instead of fighting, they get Dean to a hospital and much needed IV drip and Sam tells us he doesn't think the murders are demonic in origin. He also tells Castiel to mojo Dean back to being better, but Castiel says he can’t and nobody really knows why. So Castiel goes to see Uriel, and they talk about the war and how the deaths are punishment. Castiel expresses that God isn’t giving the orders, Uriel leaves. Cas goes to see Anna under a streetlamp and tells her he’s considering disobedience and she says “good” but Castiel doesn’t want to fall and so Anna doesn’t want to hear anything about it anymore.
Anna leaves and Castiel spots a watermain wheel and figures something out. When he’s back in the dungeon of doom he inspects the devils trap and the watermain and puts two and two together and this episode is almost Castiel-centric isn’t it? I like. There’s a bit of conversation over who could have broken the trap and if the only thing “that can kill an angel is another angel” then oh my lord it’s Uriel who’s been killing the garrison! I know it’s meant to be a bombshell and it kinda is, but in more of an ooooh, riiiight, now it all makes sense kind of way rather than oh my effing lord, did you see that coming? I totally didn’t see that coming! way.
Uriel wants the apocalypse to happen. He thinks that their father isn’t their father and he’s insanely jealous of humanity. He wants Cas to remain his BFF (cause they have been since “forever”) and help him raise Lucifer. Apparently the light-bringer was “beautiful” and a ton of fun with daisies and elevator music before he threw himself out of heaven. I totally want to mention that I read a fanfic that was not only called ‘Lucifer Rising’, but had a subplot in which Castiel, Uriel, Anna (who was called Afriel) and Lucifer had this really tight little friendship/siblinghood that was emotionally destructive when Lucifer left. It was like SavingFaith’s story had just become canon. Anyway. Uriel just wants his brother back, but doesn’t seem to realise that Lucy has spent a millennia in human years and a googlennia in hell years in hell so he probably isn’t into the daisies and elevator music anymore.
God doesn’t seems to be God anymore because Uriel killing angels is “proof of that”. He wasn’t gonna kill the whole garrison, “just the ones who said ‘no’”. Which is totally frightening because there’s a whole army of rebel angels wandering around who want the apocalypse to happen. He really wants Castiel to help him and I almost thought for a moment Castiel might. This little exchange occurs:
Uriel: all you have to do is be unafraid
Castiel: for the first time, in a long time… I am.
And then Castiel brings his arm back and thwacks Uriel in the chest and sends him backwards through a brick wall. Woot! Go team Cas!
Uriel isn’t happy about it at all and starts throwing punches back at Castiel and Castiel looks so cute with his fists up like that. It’s a bit epic and a fair amount of blood (and Misha mate, this is more than a bad breakup). They’re lucky they can heal from things like that in a jiffy.
So then there’s this (punctuated by nasty punches from Uriel):
Cas: You can’t win, Uriel, I still serve God.
Uriel: You haven’t even met the man! There is no will, no wrath, no God.
And then Anna shows up and stabs Uriel in the throat.
Anna: Maybe, maybe not, but there’s still me.
This line irks me a bit. I’m not sure what she means by it. Either she’s actually really powerful (like, she’s actually Jesus or something) or she was part of the angel police who catches disobedient angels (which is kind of ironic since she fell for disobedience). Maybe she just wanted to give Uriel something to be scared of when he died. Oh, wait. I think she means she has will and she has wrath. Bingo. So! Uriel lays there and he dies and there’s a lot of white light and another amazing overhead wing imprint shot. Anna and Cas look at each other and they’ve totally got each other’s backs.
Dean wakes up to Castiel sitting by his bedside (watch the fangirls squee) and Cas is genuinely concerned, but Dean’s too angry at
himself to care much. He sounds terrible. There’s a bit of talk about Uriel and the war but all Dean’s interested in is if he is the cause of everything. Poor baby, I really want to hug him right about now. He’s shattered that he started the apocalypse.
Dean: is it true, did I start all this?
Castiel: Yes. When we discovered Lilith’s plan for you, we laid siege to hell.
And I totally need to see this sequence in cinemascope and surround sound, how fucking amazing would that be?
Castiel: And we fought our way to get to you, before-
Dean: So I started the apocalypse. (It’s not a question.)
Castiel: But we were to late.
Dean: Why didn’t you just leave me there then. (Not a question either)
Castiel: It’s not blame that falls on you Dean, it’s fate.
And the says this little gem
“The righteous man who begins it is the only one who can finish it”
Dean: Lucifer. The apocalypse. What does that mean? (He sounds shredded)
Castiel doesn’t know what it means, in fact he doesn’t know much. But he does know that Dean’s the solution and Dean reckons that they’re screwed. He thinks he can’t do it, that it’s “too big”.
Dean: Alistair was right, I’m not all here, I’m not str-… I’m not strong enough. I guess I’m not the man either of our dad’s wanted me to be.
And that totally fits my Dean theory.
He wants Cas to find someone else and there’s not much else to say and Jensen Ackles is so gonna need therapy if he has to do many more of these scenes.
So the episode ends. Woah.
I was gonna also type my Dean theory, but this is so damn long already that I wont. Besides, I won’t put you through that if you don’t want to hear about it.
Amazing episode.
